Health Benefits
The feijoa is also known as pineapple guava, or guavasteen, the feijoa originates from South America but can now be found in subtropical/tropical areas, including Australia and New Zealand.
Feijoas are sweet-tasting fruit, similar to pineapple, and strawberry. The best part of the fruit is the jelly-like substance (which has tiny seeds) in the centre. There’s a different texture surrounding the jelly, similar to a soft pear texture…this is also edible.
Sharon King (Nutritionist) recommends feijoas should be included in the diet if available, as they are very beneficial for gut health regarding fibre and pack a good nutrient punch. However, as with any fruit, be mindful of portion sizes and serving recommendations would be 1-2 in a sitting. Feijoas have lots of health benefits and are very low on the Glycemic Index and they are a good source of:
Calories, Carbohydrates,Fiber,Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium, Vitamin C
Feijoas are ripe on the tree from late March to June in the Southern Hemisphere, and October to December in the Northern Hemisphere. Most people eat them raw, but they can be used in a variety of recipes.
