YUKA – background

Founded in France in 2017 Yuka has garnered more than 30 million downloads, boasts 6 million active users, and is used to scan 2.2 million products every day. It has been steadily expanding beyond its native France and is currently available on the App Store and Play Store in the Unites States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Ireland, France, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Spain and Italy.

The YUKA app works by scanning the barcodes of food and personal care products. The platform then rates the item and returns the information to help consumers understand the health of each product: excellent = between 75 and 100, good = between 50 and 74, mediocre = between 25 and 49 and finally bad = <25.

In order to make things more readable, the application also assigns a color code that goes from green to red. Where a product is deemed to have a negative impact on the consumer’s health, the app recommends a healthier alternative.
